AUF DER REISE: MONTENEGRO 05

Eine Ode an die Schönheit dieses Landes,
an 1350 Stufen in der Bucht von Kotor,
an saftige Granatäpfel,
an Schneestraßen und Bergseen,
an Inseln im Meer und glorreiche Sonnenuntergänge.
An neue Freundschaften und klares Wasser.
Kristallklar.

Unser Start in Montenegro verläuft etwas anstrengend.

An ode to the beauty of this country,
to 1350 steps in the bay of Kotor,
to juicy pomegranates,
to snow roads and mountain lakes,
to islands in the sea and glorious sunsets.
To new friendships and clear water.
Crystal clear.

Our start in Montenegro is a bit exhausting. Maybe it is also being a little tired of travelling, which slowly develops after five weeks on the road. Our first accommodation we find after a rather spontaneous crossing of the border from Bosnia into Montenegro has bugs. We're moving into another room but to be honest: I can’t really sleep. In the morning, however, we are greeted by a beautiful sight of the reservoir lake, which is located right in front of us.

The Durmitor National Park is in Northern Montenegro and we encounter and experience very different things: snow-covered roads that make us take another detour, park rangers who drive half an hour behind us to try and stop us at the slightest suspicion (but we had more patience), an icy night on an empty mountain camping site, a wonderfully fresh Cerno Jezero, the black lake, with the mountain peaks in the background; and many friendly encounters with stray dogs. Then we decide to drive back to the sunny, warm Adriatic Sea.

We make a short stop at the wine producer Plantaze for a wine tasting. A slightly tipsy me drinks some really strong coffee in the parking lot before the journey can continue. A friendly soul opens his camping-site just for us, just for one night, as we knock on his door when it’s already dark. In the bay of Kotor we climb 1350 steps of the fortress wall and Tyson makes sure he’s the first on top. We find beautiful beaches one after the other, crystal clear water, everywhere we go, we visit the island of the rich and beautiful, Sveti Stefan, and in between and again and again: eating juicy pomegranates. While we’re at the last campsite before we want to cross into Albania we meet a couple (he is from Germany, she from Slovenia) which is on a European tour with their camper. It is a long and funny night in their company. Montenegro is relatively easy to experience as tourist and no doubt, one of the most beautiful countries I have seen.

Then: the joyful anticipation of the next, much lesser known country Albania.
